"1/2-As a science journalist with a regular column in Scientific American, Jeremy Marsh specializes in debunking the supernatural. When a local resident and psychic of telling baby genders, Doris, sends a letter inviting him to Boone Creek, he travels there with his camera-man, Alvin, determined to find the real cause behind the ghostly apparitions that appear in the town cemetery. Little does he know that Doris also wants Jeremy to meet her granddaughter, Lexie Darnell, whose parents died, so Doris raised her. The lights in the town cemetery only occur in the winter months when there is fog and the lights of the incoming train reflect off the paper mill. The town knows the cause and is divided over whether or not to make tourism money on a “haunted tour.” The real climax of the book is whether or not Jeremy and Lexie can have a relationship if she wants to stay in Boone Creek and he wants to live in NY. Not to mention, they both have pain from past relationships. Jeremy’s first wife left him due to his inability to conceive and Lexie has been hurt by two boyfriends who either cheated or left without saying anything. Lexie pushes Jeremey away and he returns to NY only to have Doris fly to NY and tell him to come back and fight for Lexie. Jeremy can’t stop thinking of Lexie and he returns to Boone Creek. In the epilogue, against all scientific odds, Jeremy and Lexie have conceived. "
