"CW: references to DV/mental and emotional @buse, substance @buse

ARC courtesy of Goodreads giveaway. “Watch Where They Hide” is available now!

A slow read, but not bad once it got going.

Jordan Manning is an investigative reporter with a reputation for never letting a story get the best of her. When she’s contacted by a woman desperate to find her missing sister, Jordan’s not sure whether there’s really a story there or not. A potentially missing woman deserves to have all options exhausted, though, and Jordan agrees to take a look.

I wanted to really love this book. Instead, I’ve found myself putting off writing the review because I just don’t know where to start. There’s nothing wrong with the overall writing structure. Everything flows in an understandable, linear fashion from point A to point B with no confusing detours or distractions. The language is clear and direct, if not exactly concise. It’s the actual execution of the plot that posed a problem for me.

For a story that’s supposed to be about a high stakes thing (in this case, a potential kidnapping), there’s really no sense of urgency for the reader. There’s no pressure; it feels like you’re just moseying along waiting for information to pop up. And maybe that’s the point since the MC is a reporter and not a detective, but I much prefer there to be just a little bit of stress in these sorts of books. I found that I had absolutely nothing invested in the storyline. While I wouldn’t describe it as ‘boring,’ I would definitely call it ‘sedate.’

If you like a book that focuses more on the human aspects of the individual characters (their motivations, their internal issues, and so on), you might really enjoy this story. If you want your thrillers to get your heart racing, to make you feel like there’s something really important on the line and you just *have* to discover what it is before it’s too late, this probably won’t be the book for you."
