A USA Today Bestseller! From “one of the genre’s most exciting voices” (E! News) comes one of the year’s most-anticipated thrillers. For the past five years, Ryan Richardson has relived that terrible night. The car door ripping open. The crushing blow to the head. The hands yanking him from the vehicle. His girlfriend Ali’s piercing scream as she is taken. With no trace of Ali or the car, a cloud of suspicion hangs over Ryan. But with no proof and a good lawyer, he’s never charged, though that doesn’t matter to the podcasters and internet trolls. Now, Ryan has changed his last name, and entered law school. He's put his past behind him.Until, on a summer trip abroad to Italy with his law-school classmates, Ryan gets a call from his father: Ali's car has finally been found, submerged in a lake in his hometown. Inside are two dead men and a cryptic note with five words written on the envelope in Ali’s handwriting: If something happens to me... Then, halfway around the world, the unthinkable happens: Ryan sees the man who has haunted his dreams since that night. As Ryan races from the rolling hills of Tuscany, to a rural village in the UK, to the glittering streets of Paris in search of the truth, he has no idea that his salvation may lie with a young sheriff’s deputy in Kansas working her first case, and a mobster in Philadelphia who’s experienced tragedy of his own.In classic Alex Finlay form, If Something Happens to Me is told by several distinct, compelling characters whose paths intersect, detonating into a story of twist after pulse-pounding twist. The novel cements Finlay as one of the leading thriller writers today.

"This is a twisty and thrilling mystery book that will keep the pages turning long into the night. The story is told from multiple points of view in a dual timeline fashion. Since the chapters are short and the narrative shifts you a kept on the edge of your seat the entire time. The book centers on the disappearance of Allison five years earlier. She was with her boyfriend, Ryan Richardson, at “make-out point” when the door to the car was ripped open and Ryan was knocked out and yanked from the car. For years everyone believed that Ryan was lying about that night and a cloud of suspicion has followed him wherever he goes. Ryan has since changed his name and seems to be moving on with his life and is on a trip to Italy with his law school classmates when he is visited by the man who has only existed in his memories of that night. Around the same time, Allison’s car is recovered from the bottom of a local lake with two unidentified men inside. A young sheriff’s deputy named Poppy is working on the case despite the fact her boss, the sheriff, has relegated her to manning the tip line and avoiding the investigation. In true mystery/thriller fashion their paths cross and the stakes are high. I enjoyed how seamless this book was. Alex Finlay was able to jump around characters, time and the world in an effortless manner. The characters all had rich lives and secrets to uncover so there was never a section of the story that felt less than the others. This book definitely has summer beach read/ road trip vibes.<br/>I listened to the audiobook which features a multi-cast narration. Each of the readers delivered excellent performances complete with accents. I was able to get lost in the story thanks to the care they took with each of their parts. Thank you to MacMillan audio for the advanced listening of this book.<br/>"
"Short chapters, fast paced. 3 POVs with almost every chapter ending in a cliffhanger. Satisfying ending."
