Set against Iceland's stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family at first avoids Agnes. Only Tv=ti, a priest Agnes has mysteriously chosen to be her spiritual guardian, seeks to understand her. But as Agnes's death looms, the farmer's wife and their daughters learn there is another side to the sensational story they've heard. Riveting and rich with lyricism, Burial Rites evokes a dramatic existence in a distant time and place, and asks the question, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others?

"“Haunting” would be the right way to describe this novel. I travelled to Iceland for the long weekend and I wanted to read something that was set there. This was a great recommendation (shout out to the site Tale Away for their reading list!) because this novel was not only meticulously researched, it evoked the land itself. I honestly wasn’t that into it since I started it before I arrived in Reykjavík, but once I saw the landscape and met the people, the book made so much more sense. It was very “literary,” and while I loved the letters and references to the sagas at the beginning of each chapter, I was slightly annoyed by the switching between first and third person. I know it’s a dramatic subject and all, but it was a little overwrought in my opinion. Still, a fantastic novel, I especially recommend it to anyone traveling to Iceland...and I also recommend traveling to Iceland, it was awesome!"
