A disturbing package leads Detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott to investigate four dangerous murder suspects in this "magnetic" British mystery (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times) that inspired the acclaimed HBO Max series C.B. Strike. When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible -- and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them . . . Career of Evil is the third in J. K. Rowling's highly acclaimed series featuring private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. A fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner, Career of Evil is also a gripping story of a man and a woman at a crossroads in their personal and professional lives.

"Probably my favourite of the series so far, after the sixth (I read that one first). Again, JKR is a garbage person but I cannot quit this series. The ~*villains*~ in this book were so scathingly unlikeable and terrifying that it really made the story impossible to put down. Sad I only have two left in the series to read before waiting for the next instalment to get released. "

"It gets personal in "Career of Evil" when Cormoran and Robin have to track down a serial killer who is intent on killing them and their business. I thought the actual detective work part of this installment of the series was mediocre, but the overall book gets four stars because I've fallen in love with the duo of Cormoran & Robyn and this book expertly develops them further. I also enjoyed the Blue Oyster Cult framework that the book is structured around - very odd but sort of fun."
"This may be my favorite of the three, and I have really enjoyed them all. This one isn't quite as dark as the second, but shifts towards a brutal reality. The characters each get a good dose of humanizing as well. I love it when you are not sure for how to root for a romantic relationship to turnout, and JKR makes it difficult in this one. Keep them coming, JK!"
