"{4.75/5}

CW: violence, gore, body horror, some others

In a series that’s felt bloody and gross the whole time, this one came across weirdly sterile by comparison.

It’s been 2 years since the storm that ended the fight in New Orleans, but Victor Frankenstein isn’t dead. And it looks like he’s finally making another move.

There’s only so many ways I can say ‘I love this series’ without it becoming repetitive but, like….I love this series. There’s so much wit and insanity dumped into a story that would otherwise be just extremely creepy. And make no mistake, the series as a whole does ‘creepy’ really well, but this book in particular has embraced the creep factor to the fullest extent. While books 1-3 focused primarily on rage and violence and gore, this one (while still exhibiting plenty of those characteristics) has veered into a more lurking, ‘something’s watching me’ vibe, a la the ‘not deer’ legends we see in some of the U.S. mountain communities. It’s also got a more sci-fi feel than the first books in the series.

If you didn’t need the backstory for the characters that we get in the first three books, I’d almost be inclined to say that this one could start its own series, that’s how different it feels in comparison. And yet, despite the definitively different cause, the book is still a terrifying psychological monster that hits all the right buttons for me. Seriously, if you like these sorts of stories, you’re going to want to get in on this action."
