A sweeping novel of intrigue and identity, of love and legacy, as a young woman discovers that her own fate is irrevocably tied—for better or worse—to literature’s greatest star-crossed lovers.Twenty-five-year-old Julie Jacobs is heartbroken over the death of her beloved aunt Rose. But the shock goes even deeper when she learns that the woman who has been like a mother to her has left her entire estate to Julie’s twin sister. The only thing Julie receives is a key—one carried by her mother on the day she herself died—to a safety-deposit box in Siena, Italy. This key sends Julie on a journey that will change her life forever—a journey into the troubled past of her ancestor Giulietta Tolomei. In 1340, still reeling from the slaughter of her parents, Giulietta was smuggled into Siena, where she met a young man named Romeo. Their ill-fated love turned medieval Siena upside-down and went on to inspire generations of poets and artists, the story reaching its pinnacle in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. But six centuries have a way of catching up to the present, and Julie gradually begins to discover that here, in this ancient city, the past and present are hard to tell apart. The deeper she delves into the history of Romeo and Giulietta, and the closer she gets to the treasure they allegedly left behind, the greater the danger surrounding her—superstitions, ancient hostilities, and personal vendettas. As Julie crosses paths with the descendants of the families involved in the unforgettable blood feud, she begins to fear that the notorious curse—“A plague on both your houses!”—is still at work, and that she is destined to be its next target. Only someone like Romeo, it seems, could save her from this dreaded fate, but his story ended long ago. Or did it?Praise for Juliet“One of those rare novels that have it all . . . I was swept away”—Sara Gruen, author of Water for Elephants “Juliet leads us on a thrilling treasure hunt through present-day Italy that makes the classic tragedy itself spellbinding all over again.”—Elle “Boldly imagined, brilliantly plotted, beautifully described, Juliet will carry you spellbound until the gripping end.”—Susan Vreeland, author of Clara and Mr. Tiffany “The Shakespearean scholarship on display is both impressive and well-handled.”—The Washington Post

"I enjoyed this way more than I expected! I’ve never been a fan of the original Romeo & Juliet story but I’ve always loved twists on their story and forbidden love in general so this one sounded intriguing! I loved the back and forth between time and getting to see the mystery unfold in that way! I also really loved that the Romeo & Gulietta in this story had more of a story and not just knowing each other for a few days and then dying for each other lol and Julie’s story in the present time was so good! My only complaint is that it’s a very long book and there were times when it dragged a little. Overall though, I really enjoyed this one!"

"A true gift for Shakespeare fans and R&J obsessives. Duncan traces the antecedents and stage history of the world’s most famous dead teen lovers, looking at how Juliet is reinterpreted by each generation according to prevailing social, political, and religious mores. She’s been rebranded as a symbol of the loyal wife, Christian saint, Fascist icon, rebel girl and representative of the 60s love and peace vibe. There’s the wacky cult of Juliet in Verona (people line up to touch her statue’s breast and used to pose in “Juliet’s tomb”)and a fascinating look at lesbian actor Charlotte Cushman who as Romeo played opposite her own lovers on the Victorian stage. Duncan looks at how Juliet’s role is downplayed in most movie versions, which tend to focus more on the “action “ scenes with Romeo and the boys, cutting her 2 most powerful soliloquies and robbing the character of her independence and power. The chapter on Olivia Hussey and Zeffirelli is heartbreaking: he tried to make her take diet pills and harassed her constantly about her weight; while “Lord Capulet” drunkenly propositioned the 15 year old at a cast party.

I found the final chapter, “By the Time She Understands Her” to be the most moving, as Duncan explores the plays continued relevance to older actresses and audiences. Challenging the notion that only a youthful ingenue can play the part effectively, Duncan introduces us to Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies and Rachel Kempson who have both played the role well into their senior years, Ffrangcon-Davies teaching a master class on the part at age 97!

Some may feel Duncan strays too far afield, giving us lengthy disquisitions on Caribbean slave naming traditions, British theatrical feuds and the rise of Fascism in Italy. Yet despite the occasional rambling this is a brilliant and heartfelt examination of a startlingly original and enduring character, who has influenced popular literature, film, dance, and music and who has come, for better or worse to define our ideals of love."
"This book was honestly phenomenal. Not my usual style, but as soon as I started it I could not put this book down! "
