"I've vacillated between giving this one 3 stars or 4. From the first chapter I enjoyed the flippant tone. It kept me chuckling and added to the development of the main character. (Although some of the language and content I think makes this an old young adult book.) I even liked the dialog between Ed and his dog---which is first for me; my cardinal rule is to never read a book in which an animal talks or plays a key role. Perhaps in the end I went with 3 stars because I this modern-day fairy tale (AKA morality tale) was too obvious in its unfolding. I am still glad to have read it though."

I didn't particularly love him. And once I got the gist of the story, I just wanted to finish it. And once it was finished, it was good enough for me. I got the message of the book and it was nice and all, but I think having read [b:The Book Thief|19063|The Book Thief|Markus Zusak|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1390053681s/19063.jpg|878368] before set me up to not like this one.<br/><br/>The fact that the dog was named the Doorman, and that he seemed to have a voice of his own (like that guy from Frozen and his reindeer) annoyed me.<br/><br/>I seem to be part of a minority by not being touched deeply with this book, but I can live with that."

"This one was great... I ran thru all the emotions, cried for happiness and regret, and felt very compelled by the central character. Not the same type of book as Book Thief, but this one I loved just as much. It's allegedly young adult content, but I didn't digest it as such."
