"A deliciously twisted gothic fantasy you'll want to read again and again, with characters you'll adore, prose that'll spellbind you, romance you'll swoon over, and a mystery that'll keep you guessing until the last stunning twist."—Diana Urban, author of These Deadly GamesFrom the author of Sing Me Forgotten comes a lush new fantasy novel with art-based magic, romance, and murder… Myra has a gift many would kidnap, blackmail, and worse to control: she’s a portrait artist whose paintings alter people’s bodies. Guarding that secret is the only way to keep her younger sister safe now that their parents are gone. But one frigid night, the governor’s wife discovers the truth and threatens to expose Myra if she does not complete a special portrait that would resurrect the governor's dead son. Once she arrives at the legendary stone mansion, however, it becomes clear the boy’s death was no accident. A killer stalks these halls--one disturbingly obsessed with portrait magic. Desperate to get out of the manor as quickly as possible, Myra turns to the governor’s older son for help completing the painting before the secret she spent her life concealing makes her the killer’s next victim.“A heady blend of the fantastical, the murderous, and the romantic.” —Kirkus Reviews, STARRED review “Marvelously magical and steeping with mystery.” —Adalyn Grace, author of All the Stars and Teeth Also by Jessica S. "This was so good I couldn't put it down wants I started reading. The writing was very good and I loved the characters. I had guesses about the different twists and I got some of them right but I was completely shocked by the twist at the end, and I feel like it ended in a way for a second book but the author says they have no plans for a second book so I don't no why they left it like that but besides that it was such a good read and I can't wait to read her other books."
"AMAZING!!! Love love love it! Good writing, good plot, good ending! I really want a sequel! Its pretty clean, kissing and some language, nothing inappropriate except a reference to saying they saw two characters having s*x but does not go into detail at all. It does have some gore though, not like bad gore but its there. I’d say like 13+. Its pretty clean. "
"Well I waited about two weeks to write this review and realized it was forgettable. I thought the magic system quite unique but the characters where not well discribed and the book only started to pick up halfway thru.

It seemed like an endearing message about flaws though the anxiety disorder was not very flushed out and almost put in as an after thought.

Like I said the magic system and being able to paint layers on to someone's features was interesting. But my interest died after the twist and the ending dragged for me."
"I really loved this book! Struggled to put it down! It’s got everything I love in a story: forbidden romance, murder mystery, & family secrets. Plus it’s a historical fantasy with an interesting magic system. I think this book is a def must read, one of my favs from this year. Expect some crazy plot twists. Also I LOVED August I thought he was a great “book bf”. Only reason this was not a five star read is bc 1) the ending in the epilogue was kinda a cliffhanger & there’s no other books so it felt somewhat incomplete but I’m still content with how everything turned out & 2) I loved the world the author created but it was hard for me to picture it fully, it was kinda giving old Victorian England with a fantasy element but also there were aspects of the world that felt modern. I just had trouble piecing it together but overall such a good standalone read - please read it if you love romantasy and mysteries!"
