Catherine Sterling thinks she knows her mother. Ruth Sterling is quiet, hardworking, and lives for her daughter. All her life, it's been just the two of them against the world. But now, Catherine is ready to spread her wings, move from home, and begin a new career. And Ruth Sterling will do anything to prevent that from happening. Ruth Sterling thinks she knows her daughter. Catherine would never rebel, would never question anything about her mother's past or background. But when Ruth's desperate quest to keep her daughter by her side begins to reveal cracks in Ruth's carefully-constructed world, both mother and daughter begin a dance of deception. No one can know Ruth's history. There is a reason why Ruth kept them moving every few years, and why she was ready--in a moment's notice--to be gone in the night. But danger is closing in. Is it coming from the outside, from Ruth's past? Is Ruth reaching a breaking point? Or is the danger coming from the darkness that may live in Catherine, herself? Propulsive, brilliant, layered, and provocative, GONE TONIGHT is a thriller that showcases Sarah Pekkanen at the top of her game.

"No crazy twist like there usually is… mom tells daughter she has dementia. Daughter finds out that’s a lie. She also starts finding out that her mother isn’t who she says she is.
When mom was a teenager she was molested by her teacher. Her boyfriend at the time killed him and wanted to escape together. He gets caught but she escapes. She finds out she’s pregnant. She changes everything about her life to keep her daughter away from the dad and to not get caught by police. She knows he’s a psychopath. He gets out of jail and finds them. He tries to kill the mom and the daughter ends up killing him to save her mom. The mom sees the same look in her daughters eyes as she’s sees in the dads. Her daughter is not phased and is actually more on her game than usual. In the end the mom continues to follow the daughter to make sure she doesn’t do anything crazy. You also find out the mom killed the coach bit regretted it."
"I loved the way this story slowly unfolded."

"Ruth Sterling has a secret, and it's one she has been hiding for over two decades. Catherine Sterling, Ruth's daughter, has a secret, and it's one she's been hiding for less than a week. Mother and daughter are each hiding things from the other, and it's a race to see who will be found out first.

This story started off slow for me, but it finally picked up when Catherine realized her mom had been faking early onset Alzheimer's. At that point, I was hooked on cat and mouse game that mom and daughter were playing. There were twists within the plot that made for an interesting read. It's not your traditional "domestic thriller," but it does keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen until the very end.

Thank you to NetGalley for the digital review copy."
