Alice Hoffman
In this “ bewitching” (The New York Times Book Review) novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic.Where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? With Maria Owens, in the 1600s, when she’s abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Nameless Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back. When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family. And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters. Magic Lessons is a “heartbreaking and heart-healing” (BookPage) celebration of life and love and a showcase of Alice Hoffman’s masterful storytelling.

"I loved this book! This is the start of a four book “Practical Magic” fiction series. This is the story of the Owens family line that started in 1600’s in Salem MA. I love the authors characters and their interaction with each other, the dry humor. Although the “Nameless Arts” are woven through this tale, the book is more about love, heartbreak and life."
"4.5/5
love this book so much definitely a comfort read this is the prequel to practical Magic, which is one of my favorite movies for the fall time so I knew I was gonna have a good time with this one it gave everything I wanted it to give it was so atmospheric, and I absolutely love the characters so much.It was overall such a good witchy story. I don't think you could go wrong with this book, picking it up in the spooky season is such a move like there's witches hello lol also the Salem witch trials are mentioned which was an interesting part of the book I definitely want to pick up the whole series it's a cozy fall essential"
"I enjoyed it! I actually didn’t care for Practical Magic but when you take the series as a whole I think it is worth reading!"

"Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman

I absolutely loved reading this book. This is my first Alice Hoffman novel, and it definitely won’t be my last. It was so refreshing to experience a story with a minimal amount of dialogue. I absolutely adored the little ingredients lists and their uses; I will definitely be trying some of those teas!

The characters were captivating. I found myself internally yelling at the stubbornness of Faith and Maria, but then I remembered their age and the historical context. As well as what they have been through. These were indeed different times. But there was indeed growth. Loved the bonds and personalities of Keeper and Cadin and dont let me get started on Samuel Dias and his father"
