A newlywed librarian begins to suspect the man she married might be a murderer—in this spectacularly twisty and deviously clever novel by Peter Swanson, New York Times bestselling author of The Kind Worth Killing and Eight Perfect Murders. Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her job as an archival librarian, constantly surrounded by thought-provoking ideas and the books she loved. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured divorcee with a job that took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger. A year in and the marriage was good, except for that strange blood streak on the back of one of his shirts he’d worn to a conference in Denver. Her curiosity turning to suspicion, Martha investigates the cities Alan visited over the past year and uncovers a disturbing pattern—five unsolved cases of murdered women. Is she married to a serial killer? Or could it merely be a coincidence? Unsure what to think, Martha contacts an old friend from graduate school for advice. Lily Kintner once helped Martha out of a jam with an abusive boyfriend and may have some insight. Intrigued, Lily offers to meet Alan to find out what kind of man he really is . . . but what Lily uncovers is more perplexing and wicked than they ever could have expected.

"When I first started reading this book I thought it was going to be a straightforward murder mystery, but I'm pleased to say it surprised me in the best way possible. The transition in perspective is so smooth, and it helps immerse you a little deeper into the story. I loved the plot twists as well, and this is actually one of two or three books so I'm definitely checking those out. I really want to know more about this Lily character. 🧐"
"Yikes 😳 one of the worst books I’ve read. I was barely a quarter of the way through and found numerous grammar errors. It was painfully slow. I love a good thriller and this did NOT keep me turning the pages. It is a short book but somehow felt so incredibly long. Definitely not for me and I would not recommend. "
"✨BOOK REVIEW: RATING - 5⭐️✨ Why are people not talking about this book more????? This book was crazy! Talk about full circle moment. This book was not what I expected. The only thing I didn’t liked was not knowing which POVs were who when the chapters started but you are able to figure it out eventually. Martha is newly married to Alan who constantly goes out of town to conferences to sell different Knick Knacks to teachers. She discovers that the different towns that he goes to also have news of deaths that occurred at the times that Alan was at these conferences. So she starts to suspect that her husband is a murderer and tries to figure out who Alan really is while he is away. She enlists the help of an old friend Lily and the things that get uncovered throughout the book are wild and keep you going till the very end. "

"There was a lot of repetition in this book - a character would have a conversation with someone, then go describe that conversation to another character fairly verbatim, adding nothing to the story. The same thing applied to shared histories - the book covered Martha and Lily's college friendship multiple times - while a small amount of context was added depending on the POV, it didn't justify including the same conversations line by line more than once.

There were also a lot of mundane details and thoughts that just padded the word count.

This was probably one of the most boring "thrillers" I've ever read."
