O’Brien, a teen girl struggling to survive in the wake of unimaginable disaster comes across another survivor.Ann Burden is sixteen years old and completely alone. The world as she once knew it is gone, ravaged by a nuclear war that has taken everyone from her. For the past year, she has lived in a remote valley with no evidence of any other survivors. But the smoke from a distant campfire shatters Ann’s solitude. Someone else is still alive and making his way toward the valley. Who is this man? What does he want? Can he be trusted? Both excited and terrified, Ann soon realizes there may be worse things than being the last person on Earth.

"what happens when a girl alone for a year finds she is not alone. what happens when she finds out her new companion is insane? This is the story in Z for Zachariah. the world is ravaged by wwiii and Anne boylen has been alone for a year in a valley miraculously untouched. she believes no one else is left. John loomis comes to her valley in a special safe suit then becomes ill.

after nursing him back to health Anne begins to learn he is cruel she then must choose to stay in the valley with this monster or leave. I think her choice to let him live and have her valley is a poignent ending that shows her kind heart never wavers in doing simply the right thing."
