When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing. One by one, woodland animals find it and crawl in; first, a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse and what happens next makes for a wonderfully funny climax. As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nicki in the boarders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on.Once again Jan Brett has created a dramatic and beautiful picture book in her distinctive style. She brings the animals to life with warmth and humor, and her illustrations are full of visual delights and details faithful to the Ukrainian tradition from which the story comes.

"Jan Brett is known for full page illustrations especially attention to detail and texture, along with the cultural additive. The Mitten is a charming book, about a lost mitten in the woods and the woodland creature that attempt to call it their home. What is so unique about this book, is that the reader can notice a story through the borders of the pages, as the mitten owner has not clue that his mitten is being stretched beyond its limits. <br/><br/>This book would make for a great prediction book, and its climactic story, allows for the students to guess and build the story as they go. A great teamwork book, I would love to use this in the winter season of my classroom, since the pages are full of white snow. This is not a favorite of mine, but definitely a book that would have value in the classroom. There are other Jan Brett books, that's are similar, that I would also want to have in my classroom collection. <br/>"
