"School's out for summer and that means one thing to Parker, Chloe, and their four friends: a well-deserved camping trip in the Pine Barrens, a million-acre forest deep in the heart of New Jersey. But when old grudges erupt, an argument escalates into the unthinkable, leaving one of them dead and the killer missing. As darkness descends and those left alive try to determine a course of action, the forest around them begins to change... In the morning, more of the group has vanished and the path that led them into the woods is gone--as if consumed by the forest itself. Lost and hungry, the remaining friends set out to find help, only to realize that the forest seems to have other plans--a darker, ancient horror lies dead and dreaming in a lake in the center of the woods. And it's calling to them. Meanwhile, deep in the trees, the killer is still at large, and one of the group's own has started to transform and warp into something other. Something inhuman. Something that wants to feast. Banding together to survive, the friends soon begin to understand the true nature of the horror waiting for them in the Pine Barrens--and that not all of them will make it out alive."--Provided by publisher.

"I’m a bit torn with this. I enjoyed the book as a Lovecraftian horror, but really think it may have been better as psychological thriller…? Lots of action and the narrative tied all the paranormal elements together in the end nicely. Overall it was pretty good. Maybe looking back at it, since it has been a while since reading it, I think it may have been a bit more scary with some deeper psychological events and not lie so heavily on the paranormal. "
"I liked this book but it was kinda hard for me to get into it. But the more I read it slowly pulled me in more and more. It was so confusing and twisted and I loved it! While reading it so much had made no sense to me and every page left me puzzled but man the end adds it all up and it was amazing! Plus if I wasn’t reading it I was thinking about it. So much that i started having dreams about it lol"
"On the fence about this one. Kept me interested but not sure I liked the story "

"I am not the biggest fan of Lovecraftian/cosmic horror. That being said, I did devour this book in the span of an evening. The premise was fascinating, and the setting hit all of the right deliciously dread-inspiring notes. The characters, however, left something to be desired. While I'm all for character flaws adding depth and complexity to a story, these characters were perhaps too flawed, making them very difficult to root for. #horror #lovecraftian #cosmichorror "
"Overall I enjoyed the book. I listened to it on audio and the narrator was very good. I’m the beginning, there was a lot of reference to God and I almost gave up then. Not opposed to it, but do not enjoy constant reference. I am glad I stuck it out as there really wasn’t much referencing after the 1st chapter. I’m not quite sure what I missed at the end as to why the woods were haunted. I know there was an evil hatchet and disgusting priest, but beyond that it wasn’t really defined why an entire village kind of disappeared. The writing was colorful and I could picture the scenes in good detail."
