Tom Stoppard
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a play which, as it were, takes place in the wings of Hamlet, and finds both humour and poignancy in the situation of the ill-fated attendant lords. The National Theatre production in April 1967 made Tom Stoppard's reputation virtually overnight. Its wit, stagecraft and verbal verve remain as exhilarating as they were then and the play has become a contemporary classic. 'One of the most original and engaging of post-war plays.' "I originally read this play back in high school, completely for fun but during the time period where we were studying Hamlet in my senior year. I remember thinking it was hilarious, especially juxtaposed with Hamlet. I found it no less entertaining now, but for a whole lot more reasons. The existential crisis that Ros and Guild go through is as funny as it is satiric, and the helplessness of their actions highlights the absurdity of the original play they are in. It's a mixed bag of metaphor and subterfuge, and I love it. The only thing left is to see it performed on stage, but at least there is a movie to contend with in the meantime!"
