Set in the South just after the US Civil War, Laurel Sommersby is just managing to work the farm without her husband, believed killed in battle. By all accounts, Jack Sommersby was not a pleasant man, thus when he suddenly returns, Laurel has mixed emotions. It appears that Jack has changed a great deal, leading some people to believe that this is not actually Jack but an imposter. Laurel herself is unsure, but willing to take the man into her home, and perhaps later into her heart.

"There are very few movies that I consider to be perfect. This is one. It has a wonderful cast including Jodie Foster, Richard Gere, Bill Pullman and James Earl Jones. Just after the Civil War ends, men are making the long trip back to their homes. When Jack (Gere) arrives back to his small village the town is thrilled to see him. His wife Laurel (Foster) is also glad to have him home, but he has changed so much that she becomes unsure that he is the same man. The village is facing a crisis in that the war has left them with no seeds to plant a crop. Jack devises a plan that ensures the village of a solution. However, questions about Jack's identity place him, Laurel and the whole village in a catch 22 which has no acceptable solution and forces a heartbreaking outcome. I'll say no more about the plot so that I don't reveal spoilers. But there are several scenes that just grab you! Watch for the scene where James Earl Jones as the judge presiding over a trial is confronted by a testifying bigot. The trial also includes a wonderful scene where Lauren is asked if Jack is her husband. Her answer and her reason for answering as she does are the kind of dialogue usually reserved for the great Greek tragedies of Sophocles. This movie is a "must see"!"
"Two great, accomplished actors who took on two difficult roles."
