"GIRL YOU KNOW IT’S TRUE! If you were there in ‘89/90 y'all now have the same image in your head: A hot lip-syncing duo in spandex capris and overpadded blazers exuberantly jumping and sidekicking around the stage exuding charisma, confidence and masses of flying extensions. And you’re also thinking of one of the biggest scandals in music history and probably thinking what a joke it was.. and they were. Milli Vanilli wasn’t exactly my oeuvre but they were EVERYWHERE and anyone would say those songs were undeniable bops.. plus you couldn’t keep your eyes off them. Then? All hell broke loose.. and we were riveted to the fallout.
I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this biopic but it was well done! Engaging from start to finish and shockingly well cast with two fantastic leads. It felt like watching the real Rob & Fab. But more, in that they deliver in creating distinctly unique individuals with their own arcs, emotional resonance and personal development. The struggles, hope, ambition, triumph and pain are palpable. Whether poseurs, complicit frauds, manipulated victims, or all three, there is no doubt these guys went through the wringer.
This made me think about the music industry, not only what it does to artists but how it affects music itself. Similar sorts of pretense were not as unknown as we might think. And now with current technologies pretty much anyone can be a good singer. It begs the question how far is too far?
Sadly the complicity of the record companies and a massive industry machine that must’ve kept the pretense going was not truly explored. How was it made to work so well with nary a peep of suspicion from the public? Why was no other entity given blame? Much was skimmed over and made convenient, in that we, the audience, are asked not to question (hmm the irony?🤔). By the end I was left feeling sad and heartbroken. No doubt these guys shone from within only to have that shine exploited, soiled and tossed away like yesterday’s trash 😢"
