Elliot is up for this big promotion with this insurance/pharmaceutical company, and they invite him out to this nature reserve to meet with him and his family. He brings his daughter along. Speeding he takes his eyes off the road, and they hit a unicorn. They didn't want to leave it there, so they put it in the back of the SUV. During the meeting they found out it was still alive. They also find out it has some healing properties. You know the durg company is only interested in exploited the situation. However, they do not realize there are consequences for doing the wrong thing. The comedy parts of this were pretty solid....especially the oldest son. Rudd and Ortega were good for the most part. I was surprised I actually found Rudd's character a bit unlikable. It felt like his character should have gotten to the point and did the right thing a lot sooner based on the way they presented the character.. The creature design was solid but they used CGI in places were practical effects would have looked better. They had a message here about big pharma that they kind of beat you over the head with. I was hoping they would have gone with more of a grey area where the bad guy's kind of have a point instead of making it so straight forward. They also didnt seem to know how to end it. What they gave us felt tacked on and unnecessary. They got the comedy part right but the horror left me wanting. It's not really scary at all. Overall it's ok but I was a little disappointed this wasn't better. Please check out my podcast Mostly Low Budget Movie Reviews with Clarence for a more detailed breakdown. "This is honestly one of the most wild movies I've seen in a while. I mean, who comes up with a story about killer unicorns? It’s got a great cast, with Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega delivering solid performances as a dad-daughter duo who get caught up in a wild situation. The Leopolds, played by Richard E. Grant, Tea Leoni, and Will Poulter, are pretty interesting (if not always likable) characters. I definitely didn’t like them.
The real star of the show, though, is the unicorns. They're both beautiful and terrifying, and the special effects are really impressive. The movie's got a great energy, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat as things get crazier and crazier.
The themes of exploitation and playing with forces you don't understand are pretty clear, and I think that's one of the strongest parts of the film. It's not subtle, but it's effective.
If I'm being picky, some of the characters could've been fleshed out a bit more, but honestly, the pacing is so fast that it doesn't really matter. One thing that did stand out to me, though, was the casting. I'm a huge Paul Rudd fan, and I loved him in this, but for some reason, he just didn't quite mesh with the rest of the cast for me. I think if the cast had been a bit different, it could have elevated the whole movie. Still, it's worth watching, even if it's just for the sheer craziness of it all. 7.5/10"
