"I didnt expect this. I'm not sure anyone did. I went into it because I enjoyed the swan princess movies as a kid. I thought it be a simple Christmas story just featuring the swan princess characters. But no, it's a full on movie that just happens during Christmas time. Rothbart even returns too.
There's intrigue and it's neat seeing past moments made into CGI. Granted, I'll easily admit the 2d versions look much prettier. Yet I don't expect much from the animation.
There's a lot of animation errors throughout the movie, too. Especially when it comes to them walking around in the snow.
There are only 2 real problems I have with it. 1, they really push the Christmas spirit. Honestly, can't you just say kindness once? 2, they fall into what I call the Disney Redemption trap. They try too hard to do female empowerment that it falls flat. In fact, it makes it seem like the female is weaker.
(SPOILERS)
They make Odette the hero because she sings a song. Yeah. Literally that's how they defeat rothbart. Odette sings a Christmas song. It's not even that the whole town sings it, just her. They could've done so much more. Plus the moonlight moved all the way to the cage in like 10 seconds but then the final moments that last with it in the cage take the entire rest of the time to reach the last few inches to Odette. BS.
Back to his defeat. It's stressed he's more powerful than before. So her singing one measly christmas song should not work. If the whole town sang or if Odette showed true love for Derek by trying to sacrifice herself then I could see it working but not one half sung song.
However, there are redeeming qualities that make me like it. One I love Bridget. Her redemption arc is fulfilling. I also love Rothbart. The chimes and him make a fun obstacle. Number 9 is cool too. It is mostly cringey, but I still like it. Not a lot by any means, and I'll only watch it for the series, but still."
