Gloria is a 58-year-old divorcée. Her children have all left home but she has no desire to spend her days and nights alone. Determined to defy old age and loneliness, she rushes headlong into a whirl of singles’ parties on the hunt for instant gratification – which only leads to repeated disappointment and enduring emptiness. But when Gloria meets Rodolfo, an ex-naval officer seven years her senior, she begins to imagine the possibility of a permanent relationship.

"I love both versions of this film but the bookends are my obvious favorites the opening shot tells us so much about her and the final shot is so beautifully cathartic. Also not sure if this is in both versions because it’s been a while since rewatching, but there’s a shot where Gloria sits after a fraught dinner party and the composition behind her is beautiful and multifaceted moving gracefully out of focus as we see her inner turmoil in the foreground. Also a fantastic woman made me sob too "
