"This is a rewatch. An incredible film that does an excellent job of making the viewer both feel a lot of anger and also make them think about prejudices and how they foster in people. I was especially struck by its ability to utilize both the atmosphere and visual storytelling (especially the cinematography) to convey the undercurrent that existed in the southern U.S. states at the time, and how they are in more ways than one powerfully relevant in today’s world. I was especially reminded of MUNICH (2005) in terms of how the writing and visual storytelling do an incredibly effective job of tackling a sensitive topic in a manner that makes the viewer think. Phenomenal direction by Alan Parker for his ability to effectively integrate the atmosphere, visuals, performances and Chris Gerolmo’s screenplay into an extremely well-executed film, paired with incredible Oscar-winning cinematography by Peter Biziou and performances across the board, from Brad Dourif to Michael Rooker and more as the deeply prejudiced Mississippi officials, Frances McDormand as the wife trapped in terrible circumstances, and Willem Dafoe as a straight-laced man who wants to do the right thing.
Special mention should be given to the late great Gene Hackman, who does a phenomenal job of a person who utilizes his upbringing and past experience in the South to get justice done in his own way and not being afraid to get dirty to do the necessary (as great as Dustin Hoffman was in RAIN MAN, I think Gene should’ve won the Oscar for this). An incredible legacy of performances he left behind and he will sorely be missed (what a heartbreaking and tragic nature of the loss of both him and his wife, and may they both rest in peace). This film is a very heavy recommend."
