"This is an interesting experiment that doesn’t really work. It’s a Phillip Marlowe private eye story that is shown completely from a first person POV. The gimmick wears out it’s welcome quickly because actually seeing your lead react to other people in a mystery film is kind of important. Montgomery is a very wooden and awkward Marlowe, especially when compared to the Bogarts and Mitchums of the world. The rest of the cast also falls well below the level of other Chandler adaptations. Only worth the watch if you’re interested in it as a cinematic oddity. 2.5 out of 5 stars."
