"The Sacrifice was my fourth attempt at getting into Andrei Tarkovsky’s filmography. I want to love his movies as much as any cinephile, but each time the credits roll on one of his films, I’m left feeling nothing but confusion.
I understand that it’s best to approach Tarkovsky’s films as if they are visual poems rather than straightforward narratives that many Americans are used to seeing when watching a movie. But even still, the dreamlike quality of his narratives are too esoteric for me to grasp anything meaningful from them. He certainly has a an eye for beautiful shots and camera movements, but when I have literally no idea what’s going on, it’s difficult to convince myself that I enjoyed the movie."
