"The central themes of this movie are first love/forbidden love, and belonging. I have always found the “love at first sight” trope very unrealistic and this movie was no different. I am also not a big fan of stories where love is developed/deepened while one person is an animal or cannot communicate in any way with the other. The antagonists felt one dimensional as their motivations weren’t explored very deeply. The ending did not feel very satisfying. That being said, the setting was gorgeous, and the world building was great. The spirit realm had wonderful diversity of creatures that made it feel believable and lived in. The relationship between Chun and Qui felt like amicable siblings and it was fun to watch them adventure together. Several moments felt Ghibli inspired and some parts of the music definitely sounded similar. Overall worth the watch. The version I watched on Crave did seem to have some lines of dialogue missing."
