"I liked this but need to rewatch it as I saw it way back when it came out. Still recommended. As an aside, Ralph Fiennes is gorgeous in this. :UPDATE : watched this again... I feel freaking old as heck. Also it was written by James Cameron! I had forgotten that detail. It's still a good movie. "
"Strange is definitely what describes this movie. The plot revolves around the death of a famous singer and activist. It takes place a few days before New Year's Eve 2000. Ralph Fiennes is an ex-cop, and now sells clips of people's lives in a black market, called playback, which is as addictive as any drug. He finds himself in the middle of a murder mystery. Angela Bassett plays the role of Ralph's ex-lover. Juliette Lewis plays the role of a rock and roll singer and the girlfriend of a strung-out pimp. This movie has a strange cast of characters, but I did love Juliette Lewis's performances. In real life, she has released albums under the name Juliet and The Licks, two of which I own. What is also unique about this film is the soundtrack. There are songs from very diverse genres. Overall, the film has some suspense, and a bit of mystery, but there is a good amount of cursing, and a plot that's really stretched out for runtime."
"Still one of my all-time favorites, just a stunning combination of still-relevant politics, forward-thinking science fiction, a doomed relationship where the raw emotions are palpable, and Angela Bassett as a tremendous ass-kicker. The exposition and introduction of the brain-recording tech is handled so smoothly and efficiently. The cast is top-notch and operating beautifully. The camera stunts may seem old hat today, but they were ridiculously ambitious for their era. I get excited about cinema all over again every time I rewatch this. I don't know why it's so criminally unavailable these days."
"This movie was absolutely breath taking I don't even think I could possibly begin to describe or review this movie properly. I can't belive never even heard of this film I only stumble upon it because of a random tik tok and I am so glad I gave this watch. This would definitely be somewhere on my top film list. Outstanding"
"I Just watched this because I guy follow on YouTube, Robert Burnett, has been recommending this the past couple of weeks since it showed up on HBO Max. Apparently this movie is unusually hard to come across. There are only about 8 other reviews on here about this movie that pretty much say what I would, so I'd check those out real quick if you have more interest. I did enjoy it and it has a great cast. I'm not sure why I didn't see this in theaters when it premiered in 1995 because it's something I'd have wanted to see for sure. I think because of that I don't LOVE it as much just seeing it for the first time now as I would if I saw it back then, but it was still good. 6/10"
"Thanks @jim_woehr for recommending this around last New Year's (2023)! I couldn't find it to watch then but it's finally streaming. There was some very brutal & difficult scenes (so TW) but I can see why it's making/made it's way into the cult movie status. Don't know how I missed it back in the 90s! Worth a watch."
"Ahead of its time - must watch"
