Mystery of the Wax Museum

"This great thriller is streaming on HBO Max. It is colorized. I wasn't sure how to feel about that, but in this case, colorizing enhances the eeriness of the wax museum. I really enjoyed the cast, the witty dialogue, and the humour. I also enjoyed seeing Fay Wray in a good role. I hadn't seen her in anything besides King Kong."

"I am astonished at how much I liked this movie. It’s the film that inspired house of wax, and in many respects, this is the superior movie. The film quality has degraded and is badly in need of restoration, but the characters are peppy, clever, and chock full of agency. The cinematography is classic German expressionism, the female characters fight back. There’s a weird, abrupt ending that makes little sense, but I’d still rather rewatch this version."
