"Let me clarify this first. It is worth watching this movie. A creative spin on the classic tale, & focuses more on the original than the disney version.
I wouldn't say it's bad, but it has strange moments. I think it suffers from a lack of editing & good directing. There are lots of moments that linger on characters too long & are just useless. The story itself is good. It just wasn't executed well.
Lots of needless shots of bad acting shown multiple times when the story could just move along. Near the end, at the circus, theres the same shot of Elle with a bad expression on her face as she reacts to what happens. This is shown twice, same face, reacting to the same thing, but it cuts back to whats happening then back again to show her. The same happens throughout the movie. Shots linger on people it shouldn't & you can tell they're trying to create suspense yet it just falls flat because everytime they drag you out of the suspension of disbelief.
That's the real problem. The movie can't maintain that. You're constantly aware you're watching a movie. When you do manage to forget, it soon drags you out with the bad cinematography & somewhat overacting. It's not exactly that they're going too far with their reactions, just that they aren't having good reactions. It seems as if they're trying to hold one expression & freeze that on their face. It just doesn't work well. Cam was shot well, but his experience & talent collided with the others.
At the end, the side characters are more prevalent yet you have no true emotional connection with them until the movie is over. Then you forget them when you watch it again.
The romance angle is pushed, & it's not that there isn't chemistry between the two actors, it's just not clear.
There's also a lot of fog in shots. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. There are times her tail looks fake too.
That said, I enjoy it. The story that is. Watching it can be difficult."
"For those who think this movie is in any way related to Disney's The Little Mermaid you are wrong! This film is not the Disney Live animated The Little Mermaid and not associated with Diney at all. That being said this Little Mermaid is closer to the Hans Christian Andersen version of the story. This film was so poorly made and acted it was a joke. Big train wreck. Complete waste of a $5 million dollar budget. Sad really. "
