After a long stint in gay conversion therapy, James, a young piano prodigy, returns home to his family farm and his emotionally-distant father, Richard. After Richard pressures James to give up his music career and take over the farm, James agrees as a way to make up for his past. "I found the description of it to be interesting. Though, when I saw that it was a "Breaking Glass Production", I expected it to be bad because of how some of their titles I had watched before had been bad. But I at here to say that it was actually a pretty great great movie. The script felt pretty natural, and the actors portrayed great chemistry between each other. At the actors really tapped into how their scripts should have been portrayed. Maybe even more than what was expected of them."
"Movies like Fair Haven will probably not be big hits. Movies like Fair Haven will probably not return a lot of profit on the dollar. But movies like Fair Haven are important if for no other reason to stand as a testament to what life is too often like for those of us who are born different from the majority. Movies like Fair Haven are important both to those individuals as well as their families to confront and maybe heal from the loneliness...the abuse...too many have faced growing up in evangelical households or cultures. My parents never sent me to conversation therapy and never stopped loving me, but the culture surrounding me never let a day go by without telling me that I was sinning just because of who I loved. 1 John tells us that God is love. So how can love be a sin? Sometimes we never really get very far away from those conversion camps and sermons before they claw us back into their darkness. It's been 40 years now and the guilt for being born this way still comes rushing back out of the blue even though both my mind and my heart tell me it shouldn't. Movies like Fair Haven might not change much in immediate society, but perhaps movies like Fair Haven will change just enough people to hold out some bit of hope for people still living in evangelical land because it sure as hell still exists.
