She has fallen in love with her secretary's fiancé and when her estranged husband unexpectedly returns, Janet poisons him, but just as she's about to dispose of the body, one of her husband's criminal cohorts also shows up.

"Bette Davis is at her wicked best in this drama about a woman who lives her life the way she wants. She plays a novelist, whose relationships with men are combustible, and uses her wicked charm to manipulate others. The acting was great. It was intriguing to have the entire story play out in one small village with only a few characters."
