Despite the chasm between their social spheres and personalities, Mary and Charlotte discover they can each offer what the other has been searching for: the realisation that they are not alone. It is the beginning of a passionate and all-consuming love affair that will defy all social bounds and alter the course of both lives irrevocably.

"Polarizing in the loneliest of ways. Quite a quiet film that realizes heavily on looks that are given and non verbal communication, which brings out a convincingly heartbreaking performance from Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. There is a couple graphic sex scenes hence the rating, it could have had just a tad more dialogue but that's my personal preference for movies like this. Despite the run time i feel like i could watch another movie right after this one, which isn't a bad thing in this case. Great sapphic period piece!"
