"An overview of Black folk and the horror genre, which I’m sure is barebones since it focuses on the US but I’ll take it. It will have some known favorites and lessor known (to younger people like me) films. Learned about Blackcula because of it. But it also raises the question what is Black cinema/film? Can it be directed by non-blacks (Attack the Block)? What if the source material is the direct opposite of Black and it’s only through reinterpretation that it becomes black (Candy Man)? Why is there a focus on the US when there’s a bigger African disapora in through the the Western Hemisphere let alone the world? I’m just thinking out loud. "
"fun documentary! there's this great sense of pragmatic hopefulness and resilience in the interviewees (like wow i love them all), actors from or academics about the films they talk about. i've seen about half of them, but i really need to try out ganja & hess and eve's bayou because i've never heard of them before and they look really pretty!
i feel so justified in my opinion of candyman now! it really makes no sense that he'd terrorize black residents in cabrini green instead of white gentrifiers and racists/bystanders to racism, and I'm glad the actors talk about its strengths and weaknesses. i also didn't know there were sequels! bookmarking those for later.
this is my FAVORITE kind of film documentary, and it knocks the subject matter out of the park. i could listen to tony todd and keith david purr all day. rachel true's re-enactment of 'are you ok?' readings sounds like a very specific kind of black horror of the groundhog day variety. placing the films in context against police brutality and demonstrations of white supremacy of each decade was an excellent choice, allowing for some powerful match cuts. highly recommend watching this one."
