"This is cringe incarnate.
There are times you want to skip or look away. The scenes are forced & feel fake. Its like they planned 4 key plotpoints especially the ending song & they dont care what they do to get to that moment. So they threw together whatever they could think of to fill the rest of the story between those scenes. Just nothing makes sense storywise or flows at all.
Even the steps (as they dubbed them) are too much at times. Yes the stepmother is often complete cringe in modern teen retellings but this one doesn't seem to have an ounce of brains in her. Diabolical or regular. Most of the moments she happens across a plan & it's not even subtle. When you look at her actions nothing holds up.
For example, she gets a 2nd invitation for her "special" daughter & "Cinderella"(Kat). In what world would she have ever thought of bringing Kat or think to bring her special daughter over her clearly favorite 1st daughter? Then she writes a letter to try & nab a rich hubby & portrays herself to be a loving stepmother. Yet the moment she meets him, she doesn't stick with that persona & comes off gold digging. Honestly, I don't understand how this version of the king didn't think clearly these people are fakes. As they said themselves, they never met in real life, so he has no reason to actually believe they are who they say they are. (Her daughter was a fake Kat & she wasn't a fake widow but she acts like it)
However, the songs are good & catchy. The singers are also great. Plus, their relationship feels more authentic. Except for the part where you can see them being forced together, not actually bonding over shared interests. It's basically him being attracted to her & them staying in honeymoon phase with a hint of mystery.
Finally it is a Cinderella story so it has that going for it. Theres always a charm to a victim choosing kindness over everything despite the evilness she experiences daily. But man, is it easily the worst of the modern cinderella story bunch."
"Actually enjoyable. 4/5 snowflakes."
