"A #feelgood, #underdog story inspired by #trueevents. I especially liked the actor, Mamoudou Athie, who was chosen to portray the young, knowledgeable attorney friend who lacked experience, yet helped with the case — His character was relatable, if not adorable, and I was rooting for him as much as I was for Jamie Foxx’s flashy courtroom lawyer character. I wished the ending had told us more about whatever became of his legal career, because to me, he seemed like the true champion & hero of this story 🤷♀️ #dramedy
@Clarence_Williams_Jr — Thanks for your review which prompted me to check this out. 3.5/5"
"3.5⭐️ I love these types of underdog Samson v Goliath stories. This delivers as you would expect it to but imo got bogged down in the middle and went a little off rails with the courtroom stuff. Still enjoyable though and it was nice to see Tommy Lee Jones again plus Jamie Foxx always brings it! "
"Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones do a great job with contrasting characters in this courtroom drama that is a true story. Willie Gary (Foxx) is a successful, fast talking, charismatic personal injury lawyer who decides to represent Jeremiah O'Keefe (Jones) a funeral home owner trying to save his family business after getting into a contract dispute with a corporate giant.
As the court case develops, corporate corruption and racial injustice is exposed in this inspirational and triumphant story.
I love a good courtroom drama and this one fits the bill perfectly. 8.5/10"
"Adult David Vs Goliath courtroom drama based on a 1995 true story. It was ok. Worth the watch I suppose. I appreciate the attempts at themes such as race permeates most things and white privilege but to me, it all kind of felt forced and the ending was anticlimactic, knowing exactly what was going to happen. There were some good things too. The acting and cast were great and there were some cool scenes. Part of it could also be that being familiar with courtrooms for so many years, the stuff they do in movies, i.e. objections, lawyer questioning, dramatic speeches just absolutely would not fly in real life. I know it’s all for dramatic amplification but I mean, come on. "
"Tommy Lee is good as usual however Jamie Foxx gives an electric performance. Very engaging to the point you hang on hisbevey word in and out of the courtroom. It does balance the social commentary with the legal scenes and has something to say without beating you over the head with it. While I enjoyed all the courtroom stuff it did come across more scripted than real life. They clearly took some liberty with the based on true events thing. Overall this was a great watch.
