"3.25⭐️ First, I do recommend this film and was beyond excited a biopic on Shirley Chisholm starring Regina King was coming to Netflix. But also trepidatious..because this woman has meant a lot to me and she deserves a film that does justice to her remarkable life and take-no-prisoners fiery conviction. Although a valiant effort, King’s portrayal doesn’t quite capture that fire. It’s really not her fault as it seems an impossible task to capture Shirley’s entirely unique persona and presentation. In footage her energy was more highly impassioned truth bomber than buttoned up schoolmarm or dignified churchgoer, though she was all that too. Her speeches were emotional and angry in a way that fired up a crowd and motivated anyone she spoke with. With that audacity of spirit it’s no wonder she could confront the established powers that be and challenge instilled beliefs that remain stubbornly ingrained 50+ years later.
The film focuses on her ‘72 presidential bid and takes a paint by numbers biopic route. I was hoping for something deeper, edgier, maybe in the vein of The Trial of the Chicago 7 in tone and quality. While occasional moments of tension and feeling are well directed and shot, it doesn’t wade deep enough into the well of her complex life, career and character and relies more on biopic cliches.
Despite its weaknesses it’s still
compelling, just because of who Shirley was…what she had to overcome and her astounding accomplishments in some very major FIRSTS. Yes she deserves more than a glossed over depiction and tepid formula. And EVERYONE deserves to learn about this person of integrity who claimed a place at the table in a highly charged political landscape, who would not and could not be *put in her place*. It’s an inspirational story not to be lost to history. Maybe one day someone will do it justice but in the meantime this movie is here to serve some of it up to anyone inspired to know more.

"Interesting story but a bit slow. The beginning was abrupt and the ending was worth it. "
