"The film defintley reflects what pre code hollywood was—films during this era defintley relied on audience interpretation for certain insinuations that they couldn’t explicitly put on the screen. Due to it being pre-code, the movie doesn’t call out either for their actions. Classical Hollywood, the code after this, followed more of a structure—a clear “this person is right and this one is wrong” and instead it lets you decide who is the wrong one.
Infidelity is very prominent throughtout the film. As the two main protagonists fall in love, there’s a lot of subtle foreshadowing that shows that eventually their relationship start to crumble—and you watch as the two characters crumble with Jerry and his alcohol addiction playing a major role and Joan’s descent as she suffers dealing with his addiction—and thus infidelity occurs!"
