"I was really surprised how closely the 1983 (Al Pacino) remake mirrored the plot of this film. (I always assumed it was more of a spiritual successor than a direct remake). The original is set in 1920s Chicago but the characters and their arcs mirror almost perfectly between the two films.
Paul Muni is great in lead (which was largely based on Al Capone). He is swaggering, nihilistic and pursues conflict with a child-like glee. Most of the violence happens off screen, but the film has such a maniacal energy that it feels more violent than it is. The disclaimer at the beginning and a lot of the police scenes were added in post production to appease the emerging Hays Code. I came into this film expecting an influential cinematic time capsule. It is that, but it’s also a fun, energetic gangster movie.
4 out of 5 stars"
