" ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 don’t be put off by the dumb title. This is not as much about the love between two people as it is the love they have for volcanos. It is the codependency of two vastly different volcanologists in their drive, well obsession, to get up close and personal with nuclear level eruptions, fiery lava flows and a host of other perils. From the brash risk taking of Maurice (I mean the guy gets in a used rubber dinghy for a casual little row through a sulphuric acid lake 😳) to the slightly more restrained but equally courageous and highly intelligent Katya following literally in his footsteps but leading with a calmer assessment of the dangers. Ultimately they pay the price but not without leaving the world a vast amount of new information that leads to saving lives. I thought it was going to be a bit like those 70s school science docs but far from that this film is almost breathtaking. "
"I love documentaries based on footage filmed by regular people during the pre-internet era. “Val" is the most recent example that comes to mind. Using thousands of hours of footage throughout the careers of the two most influential volcanologists of all time, Sara Dosa created “Fire of Love”, a beautifully tragic depiction of the love Katia and Maurice Krafft had for volcanoes, and for each other."
"This documentary was beautifully filmed, but also did a great job of telling a personal story in a way that didn’t seem cloying. Ignore the bad title - this is a great movie."
