"Pride Day 11: So, this might be one of the more... Challenging movies I put forth on this list. There will undoubtedly be many who find this movie pretentious, or unpleasant, or boring. Okay, let's start with who Derek Jarman is. Derek Jarman is the director and writer of this movie, he was a fairly prolific gay director in the UK in the 70s and 80s. He made very gay movies and was somewhat of a provocateur. I might be returning to him this month but tbh I really haven't seen that many of his movies besides this. By the 90s he was in the fairly late stages of HIV/AIDs which is what this movie is about. In the later stages of AIDs Derek Jarman was losing his eyesight. Blue is a movie in which the picture is a static blue screen with a voiceover over it. You are intentionally deprived of visuals. The voiceover tells stories of Blue as if they were a character, tells stories of Jarman going to the clinic for eye tests and treatment and living with late stage AIDs as well, and has Jarman listing lovers who had already died of the disease. It's loosely based off a book Jarman wrote called Chroma where he personified a number of colors. Derek Jarman himself died in 1994, one year after this movies release. Please note, Jarman is a provocateur from the 70s. He uses some outdated language and a few homophobic slurs. I understand it but if it's something you would like to avoid at all costs I'm giving warning."
