"Director/Star Rudy Mancuso tells his autobiographical story in this quasi musical about living with synesthesia, a condition in which he hears rhythms in every day sounds. There are a few missed notes but he does a good job showing us what he hears, wrapped up in a love letter to Newark NJ and his wonderful mother. The romance is hit and miss, as is his attention span. But it’s cute and funny and worth a watch. "
"Based on a true story, the movie follows a guy that's really into puppets, has just been dumped by his American gf and is being urged by his mom to date a Brazilian girl. The story is interesting, focusing on the influence our relationships have on us as well as giving doses of the Brazilian culture and language (Portuguese). I would definitely recommend! It's not a musical where people break out into song at all, though there are transitions where maybe 3 lines are sang but that's a guy busking. Not enough to bother you if you hate musicals (like me). 9/10🐟"
"I loved the uniqueness of this movie about living with synesthesia and all that comes with that. There are fun, buoyant musical sequences that captured my heart, as this story just goes to show how we all view the world a little differently. Sound and surroundings are these movie’s drivers as is loving someone that gets you more specially than the rest. To be understood is a beautiful, magical feeling, if a little more than difficult to come by. So, once you find that person, the one that makes you tick, hold them close and embark on this crazy journey we call life together!
The visuals and quirky art in this were really fun and spirited, tying together the narrative effectively and meaningfully. I learned a lot about just letting go and living life, free and boundlessly, in the process. It is important to fluidly connect to our beliefs, passions, and truths that inspire our zest for life further and the belief that we can and will be something more, but are also more than enough as we are. "really great stuff from rudy. i’ve always admired him, even back in his cringey vine days. he’s got a really cool brain and it’s amazing to watch how it works. i was enthralled with each transition and how everything flowed so beautifully. relatable, earnest, innovative, everything you’d want in a piece of art that encapsulates such a big part of someone’s life. "The music is just okay imo. The love triangle is utterly cliche. It’s not really a romcom; it’s more a coming of age story. The two girls aren’t even treated as real characters: they’re just symbols of the two different paths the main character can take in life. I appreciated the Brazilian rep and wished we had gotten to learn more about the main character’s conflicting feelings toward his culture and his neighborhood. I really liked seeing synesthesia onscreen. I’ve never heard of rythmic synesthesia before, so it was really cool to learn about it. Overall, it was an alright movie. Mixed bag."
"A wonderful, funny, musical film from first time director Rudy Mancuso! Watch it! It’s great!"
