"I'm constantly surprised by how great this sequel is.
They honored the original & expanded the world/story. Not many sequels that no longer focus on the main character work out well. Half the time viewers hate them, but we still get Simba. He's grown & learned but he's still not perfect by any means. You see his faults in this one as you also learn to love the new main character, his daughter.
There's also the loveable fact that the Lion King was heavily inspired by Hamlet & this movie is inspired by another Shakespeare play. I won't say what to avoid some spoilers but you'll know it very quick. Neither stories are replicas of the Shakespeare plays but you see the inspiration behind it, just like you see the inspiration for this is the Lion King.
The songs are clearly inspired by the originals yet have their own meaning based on the current story. We have a new circle of life, hakuna matata, & can u feel the love tonight. All of which aren't copying the originals but are in fact guided by them. You'll know right away what they're supposed to represent but it works for the story.
Normally with bad sequels they try to rehash the first movie & all the lessons it taught. This one is showing you a new side to Simba while expanding the original world. We see how the world has changed since the 1st & now get to explore it all over again in a new perspective.
The villain isn't Scar but it still works. The song is clearly a homage to Be Prepared in a new environment with new motives. I love watching how this movie honors the original, does its own thing, creates beautiful music, & still has a memorable storyline to follow. It's deep & complicated just like Lion King, yet still is simple & clear for the younger audience. I watched this as a kid & preferred it to the original so often. Your kids will like it too.
It's just amazing what they did with this movie, especially when early Disney wasn't the best known for its straight to VHS sequels. They did this justice."
"Loved this as a child and it's still pretty good watching it as an adult"
