"Irma Vep (2022) must be one of the most meta pieces of media that I have ever seen. It is the Escher painting of a snake that bites it's own tail. At times funny, philosophical, crass, sexy, soap operaesque, therapeutic, spiritual and satirical, it is a grab bag without a real story arc but instead is a semi-autobiographical slice of life show about the director Olivier Assayas and a glimpse into the film industry, past and present. I was a huge fan of Assayas' Clouds of Sils Maria which also brilliantly merged reality and fiction but Irma Vep takes this to a whole new level and in the process overshoots. I know HBO and A24 are the champions of unconventional show/movie-making (and I love them for it) but I honestly have no idea how this got made. While very well crafted and featuring some outstanding actors, Irma Vep (2022) seems to have been made mostly for Assayas himself and maybe 5 film critics that know enough about the original Les Vampires, Assayas' 90s reimagination of it Irma Vep and his interwoven personal story to get and enjoy all 5 layers this show is operating on. 6 out of 10"
"One of the best breakdowns of how a film actually gets made and the lives of the people who make them. "
