"I couldn't wait to see this series about a real man of justice. Bass Reeves was one of the first black deputy sheriffs in the United States. David Oyelowo is executive producer and stars as the title character bass Reeves. This series was excellent as an experience. The pacing is slow but they are, but the storytelling is rich and multifaceted. Donald Sutherland, Dennis Quaid, Barry Pepper, and an amazing female cast join David in this great tale of the West. The setting is just after slavery had ended and blacks tried to start their new lives alongside American Indians. Bass tries to start his new life as a lawman. As you can imagine, there are obstacles in his path. In addition, Bass has to wrestle with what true justice really means. We also get to see how the frontier women such as his wife and their andchildren battle prejudice and racism, and other obstacles to their emotional and physical freedom. I must admit this is one of the few historical series that I could not binge. Each episode is emotional, and tells a very deep story. It took me months to watch the entire series. That was the best way for me to appreciate each episode: as if it was a story of its own. Bass Reeves has always been an intriguing historical figure to me, and David Oyelowo did him "justice.""
"Just watched S1 E4. Not for the pigeon-livered, lol.🕊🥩
If anyone is waiting until all episodes are out before viewing, I see 12.17.23 as the date when the last episode 8 drops. I couldn't wait and watched the first 2 episodes available on Paramount+ 11.05.23. So far, I found VERY favorable. I like that this is based on a real person, and so interesting to see how Bass Reeves changed over the course of the first 2 episodes. I gave 4 stars thus far, but great potential to be bumped up to 5 stars after viewing the entire series. Felt like I was watching an epic major motion picture rather than a TV series, and I was gripped from the beginning, as I was in "1883" and "1923." Some brutal, close-up, graphic scenes looked genuine, almost too good detail there and kinda cringy, but all adds up to the appeal. I saw Dennis Quaid so far in here. Donald Sutherland and Dale Dickey (I look forward to seeing her--she would be perfect for this role imo) to be making future appearances. I'm very much looking forward to next Sunday...
I wrote the below in the past, before viewing:
This "1883" spinoff, premiering Sunday, 11.05.23, looks worthwhile to check out imo. Agreed per the preview here in that "1883" was not your typical western by any means. "1883" was very unique (as well as "1923"), and perhaps this new spinoff may follow suit. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/no-yellowstone-return-sight-paramount-161826876.html (Note that Bass Reeves believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger.)"
"So far seen season 1 episode 5 - the lastest episode available.
Its a great show for any fans of Westerns and on par with what Weve come to expect from Taylor Sheridan (he hasnt made his usual cameo yet so far).
As one would expect, the series does deviate from real Bass Reeves story a bit - most notably, how he learned to shoot and how he became a freed slave. His mustache in the show is much less impressive than the real Bads Reeves’.
Im summary, great story telling, great movie-like production, great acting and cast.
Highly recommend."
