"Gattaca is a fascinating sci-fi film that explores the implications of a future where genetic engineering has become the norm. The beginning is particularly strong, as we learn about Vincent's backstory and his journey to pursue his dreams.
However, the movie's pacing can be a bit uneven, and some plot threads feel like they're dropped without resolution. The investigation that follows a mysterious event feels like a distraction from Vincent's main struggle, and it's frustrating that it doesn't really go anywhere. Some characters, like Irene, feel underdeveloped and don't seem to serve much purpose in the story.
Despite these flaws, the movie's themes and reflective nature are well done. The futuristic, high-tech world building is impressive. What's most intriguing is how surprisingly relevant Gattaca remains, even nearly thirty years after its release. The movie's exploration of genetic engineering, DNA analysis, and the implications of a society that values genetic perfection above all else continues to resonate with society today.
This sense of disconnection and longing is perfectly captured in Vincent's reflection: "For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home."
Ethan Hawke and Jude Law deliver strong performances, and the mysterious atmosphere was well done. A solid movie with some interesting ideas that have only grown more relevant with time. 3.5⭐️"
