A novel about the magical lure of books and summoning the courage to rewrite our stories by the Amazon Charts bestselling author of The Keeper of Happy Endings and The Last of the Moon Girls. Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer's affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books' previous owners--an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance. With no trace of how these mysterious books came into the world, Ashlyn is caught up in a decades-old literary mystery, beckoned by two hearts in ruins, whoever they were, wherever they are. Determined to learn the truth behind the doomed lovers' tale, she reads on, following a trail of broken promises and seemingly unforgivable betrayals. The more Ashlyn learns about Hemi and Belle, the nearer she comes to bringing closure to their love story--and to the unfinished chapters of her own life.

"To date, this has been my favorite book. I’ve read this year. I loved the back-and-forth between the characters. I love the mystery in the romance that felt so real. The time I didn’t spend reading this book, I spent thinking about it.
I loved how the author chose to tell the story. Two characters have written books to each other and we as readers get to read the back-and-forth. It seems like it would be confusing, but it is done very well. The voice that each character possesses in their writing is strong and unbelievable.
Davis creates a story in which she perfectly blended mystery, romance, historical fiction, and a tiny dash of fantasy. I’m in awe of how all of my favorite genres come together in this one book. I don’t remember how I came across this book but I won’t be forgetting it.
Despite all the praise, it is not a full five star book. Toward the end, the last 50 pages or so, the plot drug on a bit. It felt more like an epilogue than the final pages of the book.
I inhaled this book and don’t regret it. It is a great book to help anyone out of reading slump.

"This book was just ok. It took me a while to read it as I just couldn’t get into it. The description sounded really good, but I felt like the story dragged. Only really enjoyed a few chapters and the last few. I guess I was looking for more suspense. "

"<blockquote>"Before and after. It was another reminder, one she vowed to never forget. That people's lives were defined not by the scars they acquired, but what lay on the other side of those scars. By what's done with the life they have left."</blockquote><br/><br/>What a beautiful book. Truly a unique and well thoughtout plot. It blends historical fiction with classical romance between two time periods, across multiple generations. <br/><br/>A book store owner has a unique gift of feeling the emotions of the authors writing of their books. She discovers two books that appear to be written by two different people, the second being a rebuttal to the first book. These books are about forbidden lovers who are broken apart by other people, yet each blames the other for the wrong-doing, when it's neither of their faults. She goes on a hunt to track down the owners of these books. This sends her on a long road down a family's dark past, trying to piece together who these people are. <br/><br/>At the end of this journey, she opens her own heart after a very traumatic life, and finally lets someone in to love her. She also helps solve the mystery of the heartbreak of the books she came across by chance, which she realizes was no accident."
