Jim Butcher
The Dresden Files have taken the genre of paranormal mystery to a new level of action, excitement, and hard-hitting magical muscle. Now, in Death Masks, Jim Butcher’s smart-guy private eye may have taken on more than he can handle...Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But he also knows that whenever things are going good, the only way left for them to go is bad. Way bad. Such as:• A duel with the lethal champion of the Red Court, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards...• Professional hit men using Harry for target practice...• The missing Shroud of Turin—and the possible involvement of Chicago's most feared mob boss...• A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified...Not to mention the return of Harry’s ex-girlfriend Susan, who’s still struggling with her semi-vampiric nature. And who seems to have a new man in her life. Some days, it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you’re charging.

"Death Mask is book 5 in the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. Harry, wizard for hire, is back in action and this time he is looking for a stolen artifact. Father Vincent is trying to locate the Shroud of Turin, the cloth that was rumored to have held the body of Christ for 3 days before he rose from the grave. The Shroud of Turin was kept in the Vatican but was stolen by thieves and brought to Chicago to be sold to an unknown buyer. Unbeknownst to the thieves, the Shroud is also being hunted down by the Denarians, immortal evil beings, that want to use the shroud for a dark purpose. Harry has to find the Shroud before the Denarians while also simultaneously dealing with Duke Ortega of the Red Court of vampires whom still seeks his death for recompense of previous events, which started a war between the Red Court and the White Cousel of Wizards, in the last two books. Will Harry survive the duel and get the Shroud back?

This book brought back one character that had been M.I.A. in the last book and we met some new characters such as Butters and some of the other Knights of the Cross which includes Michael Carpenter, Harry's friend and ally. The plot was good and the story flowed well but it is still not the most exciting. This book was much better than the first three books combined but it still make me wonder when things really start to pick up wit the plot....Recommended to fans of urban fantasy and police procedurals all rolled into one."
