“We Set the Dark on Fire burns bright. It will light the way for a new generation of rebels and lovers.” —NPR“Mejia pens a compelling, gripping story that mirrors real world issues of immigration and equality.” —BuzzfeedFive starred reviews!!In this daring and romantic fantasy debut perfect for fans of The Handmaid’s Tale and Latinx authors Zoraida Córdova and Anna-Marie McLemore, society wife-in-training Dani has a great awakening after being recruited by rebel spies and falling for her biggest rival. At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run a husband’s household or raise his children. Both paths promise a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class.Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her pedigree is a lie. She must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society. And school couldn’t prepare her for the difficult choices she must make after graduation, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani cling to the privilege her parents fought to win for her, or will she give up everything she’s strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at a forbidden love?

"I really enjoyed this!! I haven’t read a ya dystopian series in a while and I forgot how much I get into them! This whole society was really fascinating in a really uncomfortable way. I did get a little bored in the middle of the book but it didn’t last super long so that’s okay! I’m very intrigued to see how the story ends in the 2nd book, especially knowing it’ll be in Carmen’s perspective this time!"
"In a fascinating world where a man is given two wives to maintain appearances, children, and entertainment while the other manages the household, politics, and finances. Danger is brewing when unrest in politics have women disappearing or arrested and the maincharacter’s marriage to the perfect man starts to fall apart. He’s mean, volatile, and refuses to accept her assistance in any of the roles she’d be prepared for since birth. He’s hiding something and she will find out what it is. But she keeps getting distracted by his other wife who seems to have much more depth than she lets on. First in a series that you HAVE to keep reading! "

"The most okay book I’ve read in awhile. I’m not sure if it was the audiobook narrator, how it was written (close third) or both, but I just could not care about the main character or take any of her actions/thoughts seriously.<br/>And the romance? I did like it, don’t get me wrong. But I felt like every other page they had a different stance on where they stood and not in the “will they won’t they way” or even “useless queer women” behavior. It was just rushed.<br/>And the ending?<br/>If you want a similar & well done version of the plot (more so couple), just watch Motherland: Fort Salem.<br/>I think I’m also just mad because I went in wanting to love this book & it basically caused a 2-3 month reading slump <br/>"
