The Haunting of Hill House meets Get Out in this chilling YA psychological thriller and modern take on the classic haunted house story from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson!Marigold is running from ghosts. The phantoms of her old life keep haunting her, but a move with her newly blended family from their small California beach town to the embattled Midwestern city of Cedarville might be the fresh start she needs. Her mom has accepted a new job with the Sterling Foundation that comes with a free house, one that Mari now has to share with her bratty ten-year-old stepsister, Piper. The renovated picture-perfect home on Maple Street, sitting between dilapidated houses, surrounded by wary neighbors has its . . . secrets. That’s only half the problem: household items vanish, doors open on their own, lights turn off, shadows walk past rooms, voices can be heard in the walls, and there’s a foul smell seeping through the vents only Mari seems to notice. Worse: Piper keeps talking about a friend who wants Mari gone. But “running from ghosts” is just a metaphor, right? As the house closes in, Mari learns that the danger isn’t limited to Maple Street. Cedarville has its secrets, too. And secrets always find their way through the cracks.* An Amazon Best Book of the Month * Parade's Best YA Books of the Year * Indigo Best Books of the Year * SLJ Best Books of the Year * Kirkus Best Books of the Year * A YALSA Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults Book of the Year *

"This was good. I loved the themes of gentrification and racism mixed with horror. I really enjoyed Marigold, a very imperfect protagonist who’s made mistakes and has to learn to forgive herself while in a terrifying situation with her family."

"Every time I finish a TDJ book I’m left with a feeling that can only be described as WTF did I just read?
What a creepy psychological thriller/horror book. A haunted house story about a blended family, trauma and moving on from mistakes but dig a little deeper and it’s story about gentrification, corruption, racism, and systemic oppression and the unjust the prison system. 4 ⭐️’s"

"This book was so interesting and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I saw a book trailer for this a few weeks ago and I was super intrigued and I’m really glad that I picked it up! I listened to the audiobook of this one and the narrator really added to the story and portrayed the characters so well! White Smoke was way more than a “haunted house” story, the background of the town and the sinister things going on right underneath everyone’s noses was so well plotted and honestly the author just weaved everything together so well. I also really enjoyed the mental health aspect of the book! There were a few things that I wish would’ve been expanded on at the end. Honestly when the audiobook ended, I was kind of confused why there wasn’t more. Besides the ending being a bit abrupt and wanting more of a few things, I really enjoyed this book and I honestly think it would make a great movie one day!"
