“Both a mystery and a survival story, here is a novel written with a naturalist’s eye for detail and an unrelenting pace. It reminded me of the best of Nevada Barr." —James Rollins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Last Odyssey The first book in a thrilling series featuring an intrepid wildlife biologist who's dedicated to saving endangered species...and relies on her superior survival skills to thwart those who aim to stop her. While studying wolverines on a wildlife sanctuary in Montana, biologist Alex Carter is run off the road and threatened by locals determined to force her off the land.Undeterred in her mission to help save this threatened species, Alex tracks wolverines on foot and by cameras positioned in remote regions of the preserve. But when she reviews the photos, she discovers disturbing images of an animal of a different kind: a severely injured man seemingly lost and wandering in the wilds. After searches for the unknown man come up empty, local law enforcement is strangely set on dismissing the case altogether, raising Alex’s suspicions. Then another invasive predator trespasses onto the preserve. The hunter turns out to be another human—and the prey is the wildlife biologist herself. Alex realizes too late that she has seen too much—she's stumbled onto a far-reaching illegal operation and now has become the biggest threat. In this wild and dangerous landscape, Alex’s life depends on staying one step ahead—using all she knows about the animal world and what it takes to win the brutal battle for survival.

"“She still couldn't tolerate bullies, but over the years her focus had shifted. She'd realized that as bad as it was for humans who were picked on, it was even worse for wildlife, because wildlife didn't have a voice. Alex swore she would become that voice.”<br/>⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ <br/>Sometimes as a reader you’re lucky enough to find ‘that’ book; the one that feels like it was written just for you. I think I’ve finally found it. This book is perfect from start to finish. It is literally a combination of all my absolute favorite things. The haunting and ominous nature of The Shining, the relentless thrills and twists of No Exit, and an overall emphasis and focus on Wildlife Conservation. I have found very few fictional books with a wildlife biological plot line, and for this one to be so perfectly attuned to my tastes is pretty unbelievable. In this story we follow Alex Carter as she conducts a field study expedition on wolverines in Montana. While carrying out her research, she must stay in an abandoned lodge that has a haunting and gruesome history located just outside of a small town where the locals would much rather hunt wildlife than preserve it. As someone who shares a deep seated passion for the betterment of wildlife, getting to read from Alex’s point of view was an absolute delight. She never backed down in the face of hardships or backlash, and she did anything and everything she could for all animals. I was on the edge of my seat with Alex as she tried to figure out who she could trust and what hidden agendas were going on with the locals. I am so beyond grateful that I stumbled upon this book and I hope more people pick it up. I cannot wait to continue on in the series and I hope Henderson decides to write many more books to come.<br/>"
