Riley Sager
In the latest jaw-dropping thriller from New York Times bestselling author Riley Sager, a man must contend with the long-ago disappearance of his childhood best friend—and the dark secrets lurking just beyond the safe confines of his picture-perfect neighborhood. The worst thing to ever happen on Hemlock Circle occurred in Ethan Marsh’s backyard. One July night, ten-year-old Ethan and his best friend and neighbor, Billy, fell asleep in a tent set up on a manicured lawn in a quiet, quaint New Jersey cul de sac. In the morning, Ethan woke up alone. During the night, someone had sliced the tent open with a knife and taken Billy. He was never seen again. Thirty years later, Ethan has reluctantly returned to his childhood home. Plagued by bad dreams and insomnia, he begins to notice strange things happening in the middle of the night. Someone seems to be roaming the cul de sac at odd hours, and signs of Billy’s presence keep appearing in Ethan’s backyard. Is someone playing a cruel prank? Or has Billy, long thought to be dead, somehow returned to Hemlock Circle? The mysterious occurrences prompt Ethan to investigate what really happened that night, a quest that reunites him with former friends and neighbors and leads him into the woods that surround Hemlock Circle. Woods where Billy claimed monsters roamed and where a mysterious institute does clandestine research on a crumbling estate. The closer Ethan gets to the truth, the more he realizes that no place—be it quiet forest or suburban street—is completely safe. And that the past has a way of haunting the present.

"Nice story, really liked the ending. Also liked the elements where you couldn't tell if something supernatural or "reasonably" explained were happening."

"Rare occurrence: I guessed part of a Riley Sager plot twist! This book is perfect for people who are interested in true crime. Something that I love about Sager’s writing is that he always brings aspects of history or the past into his novels which adds a very intriguing element to the plot. Not my absolute favorite, but it was very entertaining and I liked it! "
"Riley Sager is one of my favorite go to authors. I’ve never met a Sager novel that I didn’t at least “like”. Personally I think this has more to do with his overall writing style and the way that atmosphere plays a huge role throughout the novels. To me, this was a very different Sager novel (and that seems to be the consensus from most reviews I’ve seen) because it read more like a general mystery than the thrillers I’m used from him. I correctly guessed most of the twists as I was reading but ended up second guessing myself along the way because I still had a lot of story left and the pacing was slow. Regardless, I enjoyed my time with this novel but it wouldn’t be the first Riley Sager novel I recommend to friends. I would give this one a 3.75⭐️ rounded up to a 4. "
"He’s such a great author that anything he writes will always be good. That being said this one is not my favorite of his, the first three quarters of it had me very invested but the end was so mundane it ruined it. Will probably be great for others just not my favorite! "

"This is a 3.5 to 3.75 so I rounded up to a 4⭐️
This story wasn’t quite what I anticipated. The MC suffered 30 years wondering what happened to his best friend who mysteriously disappeared one night after camping in his backyard. To add to that stress he was staying at his parents house after leaving his previous home struggled with issues regarding his wife which made going back to his hometown to face an old ghost that much harder.

It was very slow going back and forth from his childhood to present day. There is a part in the story regarding something weird with his mom losing her job and his weirdo neighbor seemed to be part of it but it was never explained. Not sure if it was cut out accidentally? I did enjoy the end though."
"Slow start but a good book.

Ethan’s best friend Billy went missing while they camped in the back yard. Ethan can’t remember what happened. The story flashes between the day he went missing and the present. Billy was obsessed with ghost and this creepy building close to their neighborhood. It was called the Hawthorne institute. An old rich man owned the institute and loved ghost and all the spooks. Billy was caught sneaking on the land and Mr Hawthorne loved Billy’s curiosity. On the night Billy goes missing he awakes to a sound of someone slashing the tent. He thinks it’s a ghost leading him to the institute. It was really a neighborhood kid playing a prank because he was mad at being left out of the sleep over. As Billy is heading to the institute he walks out in front of a car. It’s a girl named Ashley. She’s the neighborhood babysitter dying to get out of the town. She knows he’s dead but she still has a chance to love. She throws him off a waterfall. She confesses years later after Ethan shows up at his old house. Ethan adopts Ashley’s son when she confesses because he reminds him so much of Billy."
